Genes impact health, as do other factors like infection, diet, exposure to toxic materials, and stress. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, and myasthenia gravis, occur when the immune system attacks and destroys normal cells and tissues in the body. These conditions start with genes. For example, researchers have associated certain autoimmune diseases with a group of genes called the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), which impacts females more than males. Moreover, it indicates an underlying gender-associated genetic factor, especially for those with a family history of autoimmune diseases.

Other factors can trigger autoimmune diseases, such as infections. Some infections linked to the development of autoimmune diseases include COVID-19, scarlet fever, strep throat, and E. coli. Foods that contain gluten have caused celiac disease. Toxic materials like pesticides, heavy metals, silicone breast implant material, cigarette smoke, and paint thinners can also trigger autoimmune diseases. The medical community has found that work burnout and excessive responsibilities double as risk factors.

Therefore, avoiding the triggers mentioned above can help prevent the development of autoimmune diseases. Other preventive measures include shedding excess body weight, eating a balanced diet, monitoring and maintaining a healthy vitamin D level, and practicing relaxation techniques for stress relief.
